One thing that is generally understood by everyone in the area is that The Court and its grounds are haunted.
The cause of the haunting probably goes back to almost 1400AD when the followers of Owain Glendwr raided the manor house as a part of the nationalist attack on English owners of property in Wales. Unfortunately(?) the owners of the manor house had word of the impending attack and decamped to other property they owned in Somerset leaving the servants to look after the manor. They probably hoped that leaving local people at the manor might convince the imminent raiders to leave well alone.
They underestimated the intention of the raiders who struck at night. They massacred the servants who were probably just women and children and threw the bodies into the quarry that was directly next to the site. They then went about destroying the manor by fire.
The destruction would have been all over the site but the servants will have occupied the south west corner. Digs carried out on site identified in that corner the kitchen and brewing areas.
In support of the theory it is reported that when Gladstone Road was being constructed in the late 19th Century many human skeletons were found in the quarry at this point. No other reason for the skeletons is known thereby adding credence to the above claimed massacre of those left at the site. No wonder the spirits are benign for the owners and lawful occupiers of The Court.
We have heard accounts from people about sightings including during Bryn Lennox’s time where the sighting was reported by a doctor colleague and more recently we have had sightings reported to us including this photograph taken by Gareth Tyley when excavating in the South West corner and he spotting a face of a young man in the hedging watching him. Beside it is the representation of what was seen.
In view of the history of how the massacre occurred, probably by people creeping on to site after dark with evil intent it is no wonder that the ghosts are benign for the owners but we dread to think what their reaction might be if ‘others’ were to trespass on site – especially at night with any evil intent.
